How Starlink works

Each satellite uses phased-array antennas and inter-satellite laser links to route traffic through the constellation. Ground stations connect the network to the wider internet. A user's dish (Dishy) automatically tracks satellites as they pass overhead.

Global coverage

The Starlink constellation is designed to provide broadband coverage to nearly every point on Earth, including polar regions. It is used in over 100 countries and has played a critical role in conflict zones and natural disaster response operations.

Low latency advantage

At 550 km altitude — far lower than geostationary satellites at 35,786 km — Starlink achieves round-trip latency of 20–40 ms, competitive with many terrestrial connections and a dramatic improvement over older satellite internet services.

Environmental considerations

Each Starlink satellite is designed to deorbit within 5 years of end-of-life using onboard propulsion. SpaceX claims a failure rate below 3%, and failed satellites deorbit naturally within 1–3 years due to atmospheric drag at their low altitude.

Yes. Starlink satellites are most visible shortly after launch when they travel together in a bright train formation before separating. After reaching operational altitude and deploying sun visors, individual satellites become much dimmer but are still visible with binoculars or a telescope during twilight passes.
